An Overview of Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the 17th largest city in the world with just over 13 million people living in the city. It has been the capital of Argentina since 1880, and is on the eastern coast, bordering the south Atlantic Ocean.

In and around Buenos Aires, there are about 500,000 people living in slums. Buenos Aires is one of the world’s largest urban areas, and many who live there live in poverty. It is also interesting to note that there is an unusually high Jewish population, estimated to be 200,000 in Buenos Aires. There are several Messianic congregations here. Of the about 1.2 million university students in Argentina, over half of them reside in Buenos Aires.  Many Aymara and Quechua have come from Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile to Buenos Aires and have formed a sort of working underclass where, much like everywhere, there is little to no evangelical work in place.

Religion in Buenos Aires

Throughout history, Buenos Aires has been the main city for liberal and free-trade philosophy, as opposed to the more conservative, catholic surrounding areas and country. The great great majority of the city claims to be Catholic, but a recent study found that less than 25% are actively practicing. The Catholicism in the city is largely nominal. There is also a large Shi’a Muslim community in Argentina, with the majority of the population being in Buenos Aires. The King Fahd Islamic Cultural Center, the largest mosque in South America, was completed in 1996 and is also in this city.
