This past week marked a historic event in Bolivia. For the past ten years or so we have had a socialist president that has close ties to Venezuela and their philosophy of government. One of the key strategies that they use to accomplish their plans is to change the constitution to allow a president to run for office as many times as he wishes with no limits. The constitution in Bolivia was changed several years ago but under much pressure from the supporters of the president. They basically surrounded to government building and said, no one is leaving until the constitution is changed. During the two terms that the president has already served there have been laws passed that are directed at the churches in Bolivia with a desire to control what is done, who can lead and that the churches pay taxes. So far it has’t directly affected us but being able to run as perpetual president could be very dangerous for our ministry and the churches. Well this past week the country had a referendum vote to decide if this change in the constitution would stand and the people voted “no”. This means that the president will have to step down after this term and someone else will become president. We pray that the future president will not only help in the progress of the country but also the churches in Bolivia.
